Vyntaris

Arch Linux · Hyprland · Quickshell · 1.0.0

Everything starts at the island.

Vyntaris is a desktop operating system built on Arch Linux. The island in the middle of the bar grows into whatever you need: the launcher, the control center, your sound, your music, your updates. One accent colour runs through all of it, from the bar to Firefox to the lock screen.

The Vyntaris desktop with the control center open under the island: quick tiles, volume, system gauges, a calendar with the weather

Take it apart

Every layer, made to fit.

Scroll, and the laptop opens and comes apart: what you see on the screen, and what runs beneath it.

Settings

One place for all of it

Every setting in one file, and Ctrl+F finds any of them.

  1. Quickshell

    The island

The control center, the launcher, sound, media and the power menu all grow out of the clock. One panel at a time.

  2. Quickshell

    The bar

Workspaces with live previews, the tray, the privacy dot, Wi-Fi and the battery.

  3. Hyprland

    The windows

Tiling that places windows by itself, animated, set from the same settings file as everything else.

  4. Colour

    The wallpaper

Drawn again in your accent. GTK and Qt apps, Firefox, VS Code, the icons and the login screen follow it.

  5. Keys

    One key to start

Tap SUPER for the control center and type to search. The first letter is never lost.

  6. NetworkManager · BlueZ

    Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the phone

Networks and devices in the island, the password asked there. The phone link speaks KDE Connect's protocol, written for Vyntaris.

  7. Arch Linux

    Underneath

The kernel, systemd and pacman, straight from Arch. Drivers for what's inside install by themselves.

  8. Power

    The battery

The power saver comes on by itself at 20 %, the charge stops at 80 % where the laptop allows it, and Dr. Help tells its wear.

  9. Btrfs

    The disk

Btrfs with zstd, trimmed every week and read through for damage every month. Dr. Help watches it for errors.

  10. Game mode

Cool, and quick when it counts

Dr. Help warns at 90 °C. Game mode starts with a game: the performance profile, quiet notifications, the FPS in the island.

  11. PipeWire

    Sound

Every output and input in one panel, and noise suppression for the microphone in four steps.

  12. Timeshift

    A snapshot before every upgrade

Btrfs snapshots of the system, never of your files: the last three kept, and the one from the install always.

  13. update-guard

    Updates that undo themselves

An update gets three tries to start. If it can't, the boot menu's "Undo the update" puts the snapshot back by itself.

The island

One place at the top of the screen, every panel you need.

Tap SUPER and the island becomes the control center; start typing and it becomes the search. Each panel opens from the island and goes back into it.

    Made to be lived in

    The small things, already done.

    Today

Calendar, weather and the weeks ahead

The control center keeps the month beside today's date, the weather where you are (any city, found as you type), and a quiet line of the weeks you have left. Memento mori.

    2,164 weeks left

    Live activities

The island shows what's going on

Downloads, timers, a stopwatch, packages installing. Click an install and the island shows its terminal, progress bars and all, whatever terminal it runs in.

    Privacy

    A dot while something listens

When an app uses the microphone, the camera or the screen, a dot lights up in the bar. Its panel says which app, with a button to close it.

    A launcher that understands you

Type volume 40, turn bluetooth off, 100 eur to rsd or check my system. It finds apps, settings, files by name and by what's inside them.

    Accent

    One colour, everywhere

Fourteen accents, in dark and light. The bar, GTK and Qt apps, Firefox, VS Code, the terminal, the icons and the login screen all follow it. Pick one here: this page follows it too.

    Sound

Every output, and a quieter microphone

Speakers, headphones, HDMI and Bluetooth in one list, the cards' profiles switched for you. Noise suppression for the microphone in four steps, RNNoise underneath.

    Phone

Your phone, paired with the KDE Connect app

Its battery in the bar, its notifications on the desktop, a shared clipboard, files both ways, and the phone as a touchpad and keyboard. Vyntaris's own implementation of the protocol.

The tools a desktop should come with.

    Dr. Help

    A check-up, in plain words

Dr. Help looks the system over the way the Arch Wiki's System maintenance asks: failed services, errors in the log, Arch's news, leftover packages, mirrors, firmware, disk health, the package cache, SSD trimming, Btrfs scrubs. What it can fix has a button; all of them at once is one password. Its Report files a problem on GitHub with personal details taken out.

    Store

Every app Arch has, one click away

The Store lists every app Arch's repositories describe, in sections, searched as you type, installed and removed with a click. With the AUR on, community recipes are built and installed the same way, no terminal.

    Vyntaris Office

    Documents, spreadsheets and slides

VDoc, VSheet and VSlide open and save Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, password-protected ones too. VSheet computes old workbooks the way Excel does. They come from the Vyntaris repository.

    Under the hood

    Arch Linux, looked after.

Vyntaris is a package from its own pacman repository. Underneath it is plain Arch, updated with pacman -Syu or one click in the island.

    update-guard

    Updates that undo themselves

A Timeshift snapshot before every upgrade, and a boot entry that goes back to it. If the new system fails to start three times, the old one comes back on its own and the desktop tells you.

    Drivers

    Drivers by themselves

Graphics, Wi-Fi, sound, printers and scanners install after each start and when a printer is plugged in. Only the firmware for the hardware you have.

    Upkeep

    Upkeep on a schedule

The package cache trimmed weekly, SSDs trimmed (fstrim.timer), Btrfs scrubbed monthly, mirrors kept fast with reflector, firmware from fwupd.

    Install

Three steps, no questions you don't need.

    Download the ISO

One image for every PC with a 64-bit processor and UEFI.

    Download Vyntaris 1.0.0

Put it on a USB stick

Copy it to a Ventoy stick, or write it directly:

    sudo dd if=vyntaris-1.0.0-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress

    Boot and install

The installer asks who you are and which disk to use, nothing more. Everyday apps come with it: Firefox, the file manager, VS Code, a calculator, an image viewer, a text editor, disk and system tools.
